  1. A metrical foot consisting of three syllables, the first two short, or unaccented, the last long, or accented (⌣ ⌣ --); the reverse of the dactyl. In Latin dĕ*ĭ*tās, and in English in*ter*vene", are examples of anapests. (Pros.)
